Religious School

The Religious School enrolls 500 children. Children in Kindergarten through second grade (Gan, Alef, Bet) meet on Sunday only, with an optional Hebrew enrichment class (Mechina) offered on Thursday afternoon. This primary program includes beginning Hebrew reading, basic prayers, Bible stories, Jewish holiday customs and celebrations through discussion, art, and music. Mechina focuses on enrichment of our primary curriculum through art, music, projects and conversational Hebrew.

In grades 3 through 6 (Gimmel, Dalet, Heh and Vav), we offer both two or three day-per-week options (Sunday/Tuesday or Sunday/Wednesday for four hours, or Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday for a total of six hours). All seventh graders (Zayin) attend two days (Thursday and Sunday) and eighteen Shabbat mornings.

The Religious School curriculum stresses Hebrew reading and prayer, Israel studies, Jewish history, and texts with an emphasis on tzedakah, values, and moral development. Our high school program, called Tichon, is for students in grades 8 through 10 and is conducted on Wednesday evenings. This program offers students a choice of core and elective courses in Bible, Prophets, modern Israel, Holocaust studies, contemporary Jewish culture, Jewish literature and music, and philosophy, and leads to a Siyyum Tichon in the spring of the 10th grade. An optional advanced Hebrew language program is also offered to Tichon students.

For 11th and 12th grades there is a Gesher L'Kesher Peer Leadership program sponsored by program run in conjunction with other area synagogues, and with Jewish Family and Children's Service.
